I came across an article and wanted to share it, since I myself, had no clue how important checking your helmet is.

In Florida we have no helmet law and I have been known to explore the roads helmet-less!  There is something to be said about the wind blowing through your hair while riding carefree.  However, the news of losing two riders this year alone made me start thinking differently.

Both my husband and I have started wearing helmets and I must admit, I do enjoy the ride alot more.  It is one less thing to worry about.  It seems that lately, motorcyclists are more challenged on the roads since "texting" became so popular.  How many drivers do you see texting while driving their cars.  It makes me cringe!  There should be a ban everywhere on texting while driving.  I thought about starting a campaign:  MOTORCYCLISTS AGAINST TEXTING DRIVERS.  (actually it was my husbands idea, but I think, it's a good one.)

My point is that we have so many obstacles to get through on the roads already without worrying about that bump on the head, and that's all it really takes,  is a little bump.

By no means, am I pushing helmets on you, I am just sharing some information that I recently learned.  For example, I had no idea that once you dropped your helmet one time, that was it.  Done!  You need a new helmet.  Do you know how many times I have dropped my helmet? Alot! As recent as yesterday.  So, here I am converted to a helmet wearer and my brand new helmet is already damaged and won't protect me like I thought it would.

Here are some tips on checking your motorcycle helmet.

The Fit.

It is extremely important that your helmet fits YOUR head.  It is not safe to borrow a helmet unless it is your exact size.  The helmet should fit 1 inch above your eyebrows.  The helmet should fit snug but not tight.  It should not be able to move forward or sideways.  It is recommended that you wear your helmet 15 minutes before buying it to make sure you get the best fit, comfort and security that you deserve.

Replace your helmet every 3  - 5 years.

Helmets do not last forever.  Like everything else wear and tear happens. Throughout time and every day exposure to the outdoors, damage will occur and reduce the helmet's protective qualities.  Most manufacturers including the SNELL Foundation recommend replacing your helmet every three to five years depending on the usage.

DROP it and get rid of it.

Drop your helmet and it is over.  A helmet is designed for one impact only. The smallest impact may fracture the inside of the helmet.  There may be no visible damage, not even a scratch, so you would never really know.  So, if you have dropped your helmet, you should replace it immediately.

Enjoy the ride....
