November 2 -- As the newly crowned 2009 LPGA Rookie of the Year, South Korea’s Jiyai Shin may become only the second professional woman golfer to win player-of-the-year honors in the same year.
Shin has the chance to win both awards for only the second time since LPGA Hall-of-Famer Nancy Lopez did so in 1978. The 21-year-old’s 1,406 points is more than 640 points better than Michelle Wie’s 764 points. She has earned three LPGA Tour victories and almost $1.7 million this season.
“In the beginning of the year, my goal was to win the Rookie of the Year and now I did that,” Shin told the LPGA Tour. “Now I have a chance for the Rolex Player of the Year too, so I’m really excited about it.”
Shin won three times on the LPGA Tour in 2008 prior to joining the tour. Her victories include the Women’s British Open. She has also won 26 times worldwide, including 20 wins on the Korea LPGA, which named her 2006 Rookie and Player of the Year.
The LPGA will present its awards and unveil its 2010 schedule during the season-ending LPGA Tour Championship in Houston from November 19 through November 22.
